TikTok Notes explained: who the photo app is for
TikTok Notes is a separate app from TikTok that focuses on photo and text posts instead of video, aimed at people who prefer still images and captions. It has been offered in a limited set of countries, so check your app store to see whether it is available to you.
A photo-first cousin of the main app
TikTok Notes was introduced as a companion app where the feed is made of photo carousels and short written posts rather than videos. It uses the same idea of a personalised feed, but the pace is slower because you swipe through images and read captions.
Think of it as TikTok for people who would rather share a set of travel shots or a recipe card than film themselves talking. It has not replaced photo mode inside the main TikTok app; the two exist side by side where Notes is offered.
Who it actually suits
Notes makes the most sense for people who like to document things visually: food lovers, outfit planners, hobby photographers and anyone who writes longer captions. It can also feel more comfortable for people who are camera-shy.
If you mostly watch funny clips or follow creators who talk on camera, Notes may feel empty by comparison. It is a niche tool, not a must-have.
How it connects to your TikTok account
Where Notes is available, you can usually sign in with your existing TikTok account, and some of your photo posts may appear in both places. The exact link between the two apps has changed during testing.
Before you post, open the settings in Notes and check who can see your content and whether it is shared back to TikTok. Do not assume the privacy choices from your main app carry over automatically.
Why availability keeps changing
TikTok has tested Notes in only some markets, and test products can be expanded, renamed or wound down. That is normal for social apps, but it means advice online quickly goes out of date.
If you cannot find it in your app store, photo mode in the main TikTok app gives you most of the same features. Check TikTok's help centre for the current status in your region.
Frequently asked questions
Is TikTok Notes the same as photo mode?
No. Photo mode is a posting format inside the main TikTok app, while Notes is a separate app built entirely around photo and text posts.
Do I need a new account for TikTok Notes?
Where it is offered, you can usually log in with your TikTok account, but check the sign-in screen and settings because the setup has changed during testing.
