TikTok Stories, and how to save one before it goes

A TikTok Story behaves like a normal post for one day and then stops existing. That single difference changes how you find it, how you link to it, and how long you have.

What a Story is

A post that disappears after 24 hours, shown in a ring around the creator’s avatar rather than in the main feed. It does not appear on their profile grid and it is not counted among their videos.

Mechanically it is still a video file on TikTok’s servers, which is why saving one works at all. The 24 hours is a rule about visibility, not about the file.

Getting a link to one

Open the Story and use the Share button, exactly as you would on a video. What you get back is an ordinary TikTok link, and it works the same way — while the Story is live.

The catch is that there is no way back to it afterwards. A video you can find again on the profile tomorrow; a Story you cannot find again at all, so the link is the only handle you have.

The window is shorter than you think

Twenty-four hours from posting, not from when you saw it. If it reached you late in its life you may have minutes rather than hours, and nothing warns you which.

If you want it, save it when you see it. This is the one kind of TikTok post where "I will come back to it" reliably means losing it.

After it expires

The link stops resolving and a downloader reports that it cannot find the post — the same answer it gives for a deleted video, because from the outside it is the same situation.

The creator may still have it. TikTok keeps your own Stories available to you for longer than it shows them to anyone else, so asking is not hopeless.

Stories and privacy

A Story from a private account is as unreachable as anything else from a private account. The disappearing behaviour is not a privacy setting and does not interact with one.

Worth remembering the other way round too: people post to Stories precisely because it goes away. Saving one is fine; republishing it is a fair distance from what they agreed to.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to save a TikTok Story?

Twenty-four hours from when it was posted, not from when you saw it. If it reached you late, you may only have minutes, so save it when you see it.

How do I get a link to a TikTok Story?

Open the Story and tap Share, just as with a video. You get an ordinary TikTok link that works while the Story is live.

Can a Story be downloaded after it expires?

No, the link stops resolving and a downloader reports it cannot find the post. The creator may still have it, though, since TikTok keeps your own Stories for longer.
