How to choose a TikTok cover that gets profile visitors to tap

On the For You feed nobody sees your cover; the video just plays. On your profile, though, the cover is a thumbnail in a grid, and a visitor deciding what to watch next judges by it.

Pick a frame that explains the video

When posting, tap Edit cover and scroll to a frame where the subject is clear and your face, if you are in it, is mid-expression rather than mid-blink. A frame showing the result works better than one showing the start.

Avoid frames with motion blur; they look broken at thumbnail size.

Add a short title

Use the cover text option to write two to four words naming the topic. On a grid of similar videos, a title is how visitors find the one they want.

Keep the text in the centre of the frame. The profile grid crops covers into a shorter shape than the full video, so text near the top or bottom is cut off.

Make a series recognisable

Use the same text style, colour and position for every video in a series, and number them. Visitors can then binge in order.

Some creators film a few seconds specifically for the cover, such as a pose holding the finished product, and trim it from the start of the video afterwards.

Check the grid

After posting, open your own profile and look at the row. If one cover is much darker or busier than the rest, it pulls attention away from the others.
