The phone camera settings worth changing for TikTok

Default camera settings are tuned for photos and general video, not for TikTok. Five minutes in the settings menu gives sharper, smoother footage that holds up better after TikTok compresses it.

Resolution and frame rate

Set video to 1080p at 30 fps or 4K at 30 fps. 4K gives room to crop and zoom in editing and still exports cleanly at 1080p, but uses much more storage.

Use 60 fps only for fast action or if you plan to slow footage down. For talking videos 30 fps looks more natural and handles low light better.

Grid and level

Turn on the grid (and the level, if your phone has one). It helps keep horizons straight and your eyes on the upper third line.

On iPhone it is under Settings, Camera, Grid; on Android it is usually in the camera app's own settings.

HDR and enhancements

Auto HDR video can make bright skies look good but sometimes makes skin look flat or flickers under artificial light. Test a clip with it on and off in your usual filming spot.

Turn off beauty filters and heavy auto-enhancement in the camera app; apply looks during editing instead, where you can control them.

Lens and stabilisation

Film with the main (1x) camera whenever light is limited. The ultra-wide and telephoto lenses usually have smaller sensors and look noisier indoors.

Keep standard stabilisation on. Switch to Action mode only for walking or sports, since it crops and reduces quality in low light.

Frequently asked questions

What resolution and frame rate should I set for TikTok filming?

1080p or 4K at 30 fps. 4K leaves room to crop and still exports cleanly at 1080p but uses more storage. Save 60 fps for fast action or slow motion.

Why should I turn on the camera grid?

The grid, and level if your phone has one, helps keep horizons straight and your eyes on the upper third line of the frame.

Should I use the ultra-wide lens indoors?

It is better to use the main 1x camera when light is limited. Ultra-wide and telephoto lenses usually have smaller sensors and look noisier indoors.
