Screen recording for TikTok tutorials: make it readable
Screen recordings are the backbone of app tips, settings walkthroughs and tech tutorials. The challenge is that a full phone or computer screen shrunk into a TikTok is often too small to read.
Record cleanly
Use the built-in recorder (Control Centre on iPhone, Quick Settings on Android, or the Game Bar or screenshot tool on a computer). Turn on Do Not Disturb first so notifications do not appear in the video.
Increase text size or zoom in the app before recording. Larger interface elements survive compression and small screens.
Zoom to what matters
In editing, scale the recording up and pan to the part being discussed. Showing the whole screen while someone taps a tiny button is the most common reason screen tutorials fail.
Add a circle, arrow or highlight on the button being tapped, and slow down the moment of the tap slightly.
Computer screens need extra care
A horizontal desktop recording fills only a narrow strip of a vertical video. Crop to the relevant window, or split the screen with your face on the top half and a zoomed crop of the screen on the bottom half.
Use a larger display scaling setting on the computer while recording.
Narrate each step
Say what you are tapping and why. Viewers who watch without sound need on-screen text for each step too, especially settings names that they will look for themselves.
Frequently asked questions
How do I keep notifications out of a screen recording?
Turn on Do Not Disturb before you start recording, so no notifications pop up in the video.
Why are my screen tutorials hard to read on TikTok?
A full screen shrunk into a vertical video is tiny. Increase text size before recording, then zoom and pan in editing to the part being discussed.
How do I fit a horizontal computer recording into a vertical video?
Crop to the relevant window, or split the screen with your face on top and a zoomed crop of the screen below. Larger display scaling also helps.
