Slow motion and timelapse on your phone: when and how

Slow motion stretches a moment; timelapse compresses hours into seconds. Both are built into nearly every phone camera and both are underused, mostly because people film them in the wrong conditions.

Slow motion needs light

Slow motion records many frames per second (120 or 240), so each frame gets very little light. Indoors it often looks grainy and flickers under some bulbs. Film it outdoors or next to a bright window.

Use it for moments that last a second or two: a splash, a hair flip, flour being tossed, a pour. Longer actions just look sluggish.

Timelapse needs stillness

Put the phone on something that will not move for the whole recording, and turn on Do Not Disturb so a call does not stop it.

Good subjects change slowly but visibly: clouds, a city street, bread rising, a full painting or room makeover. Aim for at least 10 to 20 minutes of real time to get a few seconds of video.

Fitting them into TikTok

Slow motion clips can be long once slowed. Trim to the best two or three seconds before importing into TikTok.

Phones often save slow motion as a high frame rate file that plays at normal speed in some apps. Export or share from the gallery so the slowed version is what you upload.

Use them as punctuation

One slow-motion beat at the climax of a video, or a timelapse to show passing time between steps, has more impact than filming everything that way.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my slow motion look grainy indoors?

Slow motion records 120 or 240 frames per second, so each frame gets very little light. Film it outdoors or next to a bright window instead.

How long should I record a timelapse?

Aim for at least 10 to 20 minutes of real time to get a few seconds of video, with the phone completely still and Do Not Disturb turned on.

Why does my slow-motion clip play at normal speed after upload?

Phones often save slow motion as a high frame rate file that some apps play at normal speed. Export or share it from the gallery so the slowed version is uploaded.
