A TikTok lighting setup on a small budget

Lighting is what separates casual-looking videos from polished ones, and most of the improvement costs little or nothing. The principle is simple: one main soft light, something to fill the shadows, and a little separation from the background.

Key light: your main light

Use a window, or a desk lamp with a daylight-coloured LED bulb, placed in front of you and slightly to one side at about eye height.

Make it softer by bouncing it: point the lamp at a white wall or a large sheet of white card, and let the reflected light hit your face. Bounced light hides skin texture and avoids harsh shadows.

Fill: soften the shadow side

Opposite the key light, put something white: a foam board, a pillowcase over a chair, a white towel. It reflects some light back into the dark side of your face.

Move it closer for less shadow, further away for more drama.

Separation: stand out from the background

A small lamp or string lights behind you, pointed at the wall, adds depth and stops you blending into the background. Even a lit corner is enough.

Turn off overhead lights that clash in colour with your main light.

If you buy one thing

A small LED panel with adjustable brightness and colour temperature is the most flexible first purchase, more so than a ring light, because you can bounce it, use it as fill or point it at the background. Clamp it to a shelf if you do not have a stand.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use as a key light without buying gear?

A window or a desk lamp with a daylight-coloured LED bulb works, placed in front of you, slightly to one side, at about eye height. Bounce it off a white wall to soften it.

How do I soften shadows on one side of my face cheaply?

Put something white opposite the key light, such as foam board, a pillowcase over a chair or a white towel. Move it closer for less shadow, further away for more drama.

Is a ring light the best first lighting purchase?

A small LED panel with adjustable brightness and colour temperature is more flexible, because you can bounce it, use it as fill or point it at the background.
